University of Notre Dame
FOR TRYING NEW THINGS:
Sam MacGinty grew up with sheep as his only neighbors in rural Ireland. Despite never having met anyone who attended college in the United States, Sam wanted to try something different. Before touring the University of Notre Dame, Sam knew next-to-nothing about what to expect. After a week-long stay Sam fell in love and said goodbye, for the time being, to Ireland.
Sam quickly adjusted to life at Notre Dame. As a sophomore Sam and his classmate, Horacio Lopez, created their own company, GiveBee, based on the concept that people trust their friends more than they trust advertisements. Thus, when people create a social media post advertising for an affiliated brand, GiveBee rewards the poster. Sam and Horacio started from scratch – teaching themselves how to build apps, working with private investors, and banging on doors to get business feedback. Sam and Horacio use what they learn to improve GiveBee’s original platform.
Now, Sam works as a software engineer at DraftKings during the day, and returns home to code at night.
