Cornell University
Undergraduate - Information Science and Film
Shoshana Swell, an Information Science and Film double major at Cornell University, launched a clothing line at to allow anyone to blast off into space. Last March, when Swell discovered that NASA cancelled plans for an all-female spacewalk due to a lack of women’s spacesuits, she decided to design her own type of spacesuit. This design led to the start of Swell’s clothing line called This Is My Spacesuit, featuring t-shirts and sweatshirts bearing her company’s name. Since Swell launched her clothing line with a pop-up store in May in Ithaca, New York, she received an invitation to attend NASA’s launch of a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft heading to the International Space Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida. At this event, she was able to meet the first Brazilian Astronaut, Marcos Pontes, and he now has one of the brand's spacesuit and rocks it! She is currently working as a Product Design Intern at Facebook where she is designing features that focus on bringing communities across the world together through conversations and inclusion.
Last Spring, she created a few more things that focused on building communities and bringing creativity into the world. She launched Unspecified, a print magazine that breaks down the borders of creativity on campus with her creative best friends Caley Drooff and Christine Yang. This upcoming year, they have plans to jump in between different mediums to best break down the borders of creativity on college campuses.
With a part of the creative duo, in March she designed for the Cornell Fashion Collective that brought 3,500 people to view the 5-piece space collection where she designed the clothing, music, and choreography. Find the collection and show here:(
