FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF ROBOTICS:
Working with a Brown University faculty member, Atsunobu (Atsu) Kotani developed an algorithm that enables robots to create human-like pen strokes by merely looking at pictures of handwriting or sketches. The algorithm enables a robot to learn stroke order from scratch, and recreate writing and pictures. Meaning with Atsu’s algorithm you can draw whatever you want and the robot will replicate it with reasonable stroke accuracy.
At the 2019 International Conference on Robotics and Automation, Atsu demonstrated a robot writing in 10 languages, with different character sets. In addition, the robot produced sketches -- including one of the Mona Lisa. Atsu’s algorithm is an exciting advancement in robotic communication with humans.
